KENT COUNTY SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY GARDENS

KENT COUNTY SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY GARDENS
, ,

Located in Kent County (Worton Elementary and Kent County Middle Schools), the gardens are under the guidance of the University of Maryland Extension, Kent County. The gardens are a partnership between Kent County Public Schools, University of Maryland Extension, Kent County Parks and Recreation, Kent County Community Food Pantry, families, and businesses in Kent County.

The gardens have four goals: To help students learn about how our food grows; To give students hands-on opportunities throughout the seasons to plant, tend, and harvest garden produce; To connect students to their community, by donating their labor and produce to provide fresh local food to economically disadvantaged families (including some families of the students themselves).

In 2010 more than 500lbs of veggies were harvested from the garden at Kent County Middle School. In 2011 almost 1100lbs of veggies were harvested. In 2012 the garden produced MORE than 1100lbs. Half of the food is donated to the Food Pantry, the other half is used at school or taken home by students and teachers.
