“With every painting, I begin with a puzzle – a challenge to resolve, a formal paradox of some kind. How can I balance this dark with that light; or this primary color with those muted ones; or this symmetrical composition with that dynamic palette. It’s all about finding some kind of contrast that will make an image compelling, and keep me on a high wire. It is in the process of finding that balance that the underlying meaning of the piece begins to take shape. The ultimate balancing act for me is to reconcile the real world image with the interior world’s truth. Sometimes it happens miraculously fast, other times it takes a lot of back and forth, but there is always a moment when I can step back and see something new happening. I find that moment tremendously exciting!”

Also featuring new work by Michael Kahn.
