The term drawing is applied to works that vary greatly in technique. It has been understood in different ways at different times and is difficult to define. During the Renaissance the term ‘disegno’ implied drawing both as a technique to be distinguished from coloring and also as the creative idea made visible in the preliminary sketch. This exhibition is open to all media that represent drawing. The Garfield Center for the Arts will be pulling out the popcorn this Friday, March 22nd for a 7pm screening of the film, A Star is Born. This will be the first film in the series of films shown at the theatre in 2019, with five more films planned for this year. Since the September 2017 installation of the Garfield’s new projector screen, the theatre has been showing classic films whenever their programming schedule permits. The concession stand will be selling popcorn for the evening, as well as the usual theatre bar fare. About the film: A Star Is Born is a 1937 American Technicolor romantic drama film produced by David O. Selznick, directed by William A. Wellman and starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. The story follows a young woman who comes to Hollywood with dreams of stardom, but achieves them only with the help of an alcoholic leading man whose best days are behind him. The film has been remade three times: in 1954 (directed by George Cukor and starring Judy Garland and James Mason), in 1976 (directed by Frank Pierson and starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson), and in 2018 (starring Bradley Cooper, who also directed, and Lady Gaga). The film showing is free, with a $5 suggested donation.
