AVAILABLE POSITION:

Police Officer (uncertified) – Starting salary is $56,060.

Police Officer (certified with less than 2 yrs experience)Starting salary $60,349

Police Officer (certified with 2 plus yrs experience-Salary is commensurate with the amount of experience) – Minimum salary is $62,471

JOB SUMMARY:
The position of police officer in the Town of Chestertown will provide the following:

  • Responds to calls for service from general public.
  • Cordial, responsive, and accurate customer service.
  • Criminal and traffic law enforcement within the jurisdiction of Chestertown.
  • Acquires and maintains a current awareness of the requirements of Maryland criminal and traffic laws.
  • Through routine patrol, deters, detects, and prevents violations of State criminal and motor vehicle laws.
  • Conducts investigations into criminal and serious traffic incidents to identify and file charges against perpetrators.
  • Assists in prosecutions by making arrests of or issuing summons to criminal law violators.
  • Appears in courts and provides testimony in support of prosecutions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

CITY PROFILE:

The Town of Chestertown was founded in 1706 and is a historic town located on the Chester River in Kent County, MD. The town consists of a diverse population of about 5,600 people that is a popular tourist attraction that can increase to as many as 3 to 4 times its population at given times during the year. The Town also contains Washington College, which is one of the oldest colleges in the nation. The Town also host numerous special events throughout the year.

REQUIREMENTS (Uncertified):

Must have or be scheduled to complete a police academy recognized by the State of Maryland within one year of being hired. Applicant must be 21 years old at time of graduation from the Police Academy (20 years and 6 months old at time of application)

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • A valid Class C Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, or the ability to obtain such a license within thirty (30) days of hire
  • Interview
  • Polygraph examination
  • Psychological Screening
  • Drug testing
  • Meet all other requirements of the Maryland Police Training Commission.

REQUIREMENTS (Certified):

  • Certification as a law enforcement officer by the Maryland Police Training Commission,
  • If the applicant has a law enforcement certification from a State other than MD they will be required to complete a Comparative Compliance course that meets the State of MD requirements upon being hired.
  • A valid Class C Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, or the ability to obtain such a license within thirty (30) days of hire.

SCHEDULE:

  • 10 and 12 hour shifts with every other weekend schedule off
  • Available Overtime includes:
