Washington College’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents Machinal by Sophie Treadwell; Directed by Erin Coffman ’17; a Perfromance SCE from Julia Stanley.
Machinal is based on the true story of Ruth Snyder, the first woman to be executed by electric chair in New York, for the murder of her husband. The play follows her from her husband George’s proposal to the night of her execution, imagining what could drive a woman to do what she did. Machinal explores a world where power and privilege are a commodity, and every decision a person makes is clouded by the illusion of choice.
