The first Earth Day in 1970 was conceived as an “environmental teach-in” for college campuses across the United States. Fifty-one years later, the environmental movement has gained traction — particularly among younger generations — while the world faces climate crisis and mass extinctions.
We will explore the legacy of Earth Day here at Washington College through the stories of the campus arboretum — which offers clues to where have we been, where are we now, and where are we heading.
